![]() ![]() One of my friends worked as a mechanic at the local Ready-Mix. At the time, I needed all the truck drivers I could muster and making a truck my 1st wife could operate filled that need. We had a IH 1700 with allison auto tranny and put a PTO on it and when we engaged the pto you put the tranny in drive to engage it we had a forage box on the truck BTW the air shift is nice, specially if the better half is driving as those cable somtimes take a strong pull and the air control back by the gate saves a lot of walking also. A fireman that drove my truck at harvest one year said that some of the firetrucks work this way and some the oposite, where the pto only runs when the transmission is in gear. ![]() Then you may find that to lift a full load you need to increase the engine rpm to make the torque converter turn. You must put the automatic in gear, then shift pto, then put transmission back in neutral to turn pto. If when you go to shift the PTO in and it grinds. It's a simple system and the 653 transmission have pressure taps for this. With this set up you can engage the pto with the transmission in neutral and not have to worry about holding the brake while engaging. On my truck the pto uses a solenoid valve to direct oil pressure from the transmission to engage the pto. Try going to MUNCIE and they will help you out a lot with pretty much and kind of pto combination you want Pat H They ship mixers, spreaders, and silage trucks all over. ![]() Truck was put together by Souix Automation in Iowa. Might not be what you need, but it is available. Equipped with what was called a 'hot shift' PTO, the spreader could be engaged on the fly. Way back when, a dairy I worked on had a Western Star with an Allison and a Knight 8060 slinger. That way he didn't have to worry someone left the pto on. He used the PowerSteering pump for his hoist, just made a larger resivor to handle the hoist. Put tranny in gear, hold brake, shift PTO, good to go. Had to put an air compressor on my truck also, in order to make the air PTO work. I had to spend money for one and install it to boot. ![]() If the truck has one, consider yourself lucky. Makes it much easier to put the PTO in gear. Once engaged, put it in N.Īir actuated PTO works great. Put the truck in gear while holding the brake. On straight shift trans, I just push in the clutch and engage the pto, how do I do it without grinding the gears? Another question, how does an air pto work? Is it engaged by air? I have the bed, hoist and pump, just got to figure out how to make the pump turn. I just bought a truck with automatic trans and heres one of my questions.
